Hello again! Long time no see. As promised in the last blog post, I’m going to take a little time today to talk about the impressive and award winning beer portfolio touted by a local brewery of ours, Shmaltz Brewing in Clifton Park, NY. As discussed in my last blog, Shmaltz has quite a history and in that time, has put together quite the rock solid line up of beers. AND THEY’RE ALWAYS WORKING ON NEW BEERS TOO! Let’s take a look at the year round beers foirst shall we? Glad you agree, because I was going to do it either way.
Hop Manna IPA – A gold medal winner at the World Beer Championships and with a 94 rating on RateBeer.com, this IPA is light and citrusy with a solid but not overpowering malt backbone. 6.8% ABV and 65 IBU’s and dry hopped with Centennial, Cascade, and Citra hops.
Slingshot Craft Lager – Another gold medal winner at the World Beer Championships, Slingshot laughs at Hop Manna’s 94 rating as it boasts a 97 rating on RateBeer.com. At 5.3% ABV, Slingshot is named after David’s slingshot that took out Goliath. Sure it’s small…but it has enough flavor to knock you back in your seat.
Messiah Nut Brown Ale – A 5.2% ABV complex but smooth nut brown ale that showcases toffee, chocolate, and light hoppy character…oh and it won a gold medal at the World Beer Championships. No big deal.
Bittersweet Lenny’s RIPA – Named after legendary comedian Lenny Bruce, this double rye IPA weighs in at 10% ABV and is as complex as getting a gift for your significant other. Yet another gold medal winner at the World Beer Championships (are you sensing a theme here?) and a 99 rating on beeradvocate.com
Well that’s a pretty good start! You can find any of those beers at your local beverage center, and most of them at your local super market. There’s also a good chance they are on at your local pub, restaurant, or tavern. If they aren’t, tell them they should be!!! Let’s move on to the specialty items, yeah? These come out sporadically throughout the year and in limited quantities. If you’re lucky enough to find some, jump on it before it’s gone!
Jewbelation – This beer changes from year to year but is always released to celebrate another anniversary of Shmaltz being in existence. This year’s batch, Jewbelation 20, was an American Strong Ale with 10 hops, 10 malts, and clocked in at 16.8% ABV!!! Yes. I know. 16.8% ABV. Don’t act like that’s a lot though. It is a lot, but pretend it’s no big deal so you seem cool and experienced. Oh who am I kidding, 16.8% is insane!!!
Funky Jewbelation – Another beer that changes from year to year this is actually a blend of a few different beers (depending on the year) that is then aged in barrels to give it some serious funk.
She’Brew Triple IPA – triple IPA? Yup, you read that correctly. Coming it at 11% ABV, this beer is brewed for the ladies A portion of the proceeds are donated to Pink Boots Society and Girls Inc. to help young women advance!
Reunion – a collaboration with Terrapin Brewery out of Georgia, this dark beer changes slightly from year to year. 2016’s version was brewed with chocolate, cinnamon, vanilla, ginger, and Mexican chili peppers. Wow! But while the recipe and ABV change from year, one thing remains consistent – sales of this beer benefit The Institute for Myeloma and Bone Cancer Research.
Hop Momma – Another gold medal World Beer Championship winner, this IPA is 5.8% ABV and brewed with peach, apricot, and habanero. Yummmm.
Hop Mania – An imperial version of Hop Manna IPA with a little extra alcohol and hops. 7.8% ABV
Death – Released around Halloween, this hoppy black ale has 7 hops, 7 malts, and is 7% alcohol. What’s it rated you ask? It’s got a 96 rating on RateBeer.com
Chanukah, Hanukkah Pass the Beer – This golden ale brewed with cocoa nibs has 8 malts, 8 hops, 8% ABV to help celebrate 8 crazy nights!
And that’s not mentioning all one time releases, the Star Trek series, and top secret new beer coming in 2017 that I can’t talk about yet. Torture me if you’d like, my lips are sealed. I will say this though, they are going to be AWESOME!
Until next time!
